A Nordic Oasis in Putney

It was a cold and starry night when we all stood huddled on the station platform waiting for a train to take us to the much anticipated press night for the new Swedish cafe/shop Blåbär which has slotted in perfectly to the Putney scene. Luckily armed with take-away coffees and toasted sandwiches we were soon feeling warm again on the train or to use my new favourite Danish word, enjoying some ‘hygge,’ an expression used to describe the Nordic way of using warmth and cosyness  to get them through a long cold Winter.
Blåbär is tucked down a quiet side street adjoining Putney’s main high street and is like a little oasis of Nordic charm in the urban jungle. Set up by Sandra Linnea West who is Swedish in origin currently working in Nordic product management and her partner Oliver Goodier who has worked as an Art Director in films for the past 15 years.

We loved this unusual wall art

For breakfast there is a range of bircher muesli and Icelandic yoghurt pots or for lunch a changing selection of tasty and healthy open sandwiches is available on the traditional Rye or Sourdough bread. If you’re just popping in for a tea or coffee there is also a selection of sweet treats such as freshly baked cinnamon buns made on the premises or some less naughty vegan, sugar free options. Ginnie and her partner Cam didn’t need much encouragement with the free samples…

Once you’ve decided what you’re having it’s time to have a closer look at all the curiosities for sale inside. I was particularly taken with their selection of quirky umbrellas on show… This one in particular caught my eye

The coffee is a lovely rich blend imported from Sweden, it really helped to warm and wake me up at the same time!

We took a wander upstairs too and loved the simple but cosy Nordic decor. Oliver explained some of the furniture has been featured in famous films he has worked on such as such as Harry Potter and Marvel.

As we headed out we were handed goody bags filled with Tea, the signature Blåbär quirky cards and something I’d never tried before- Birch water. This Finnish health drink has been used for centuries by gathering the sap from the top of the Birch tree that is bursting with minerals and vitamins from within the tree. It’s got less sugar than coconut water and is set to take the health world by storm. It was a unanimous favourite with us lot!
Blåbär’s mission is to encourage people to’ live a more Nordic life’ where the emphasis is on balance, creativity, community, health and happiness. We certainly felt uplifted from our visit and inspired to live a more Nordic life style ourselves (Minus the cinnamon buns).
