Not long ago we brought to your attention London’s very first cereal cafe that’s lent a whole new twist to breakfasting out and today we want to share with you another freshly opened gem- London’s very first Porridge cafe!
Porridge has long been associated as a staple but rather predictable breakfast option perhaps bringing to the mind the image of a rosy-cheeked Scottish woman slaving over a steaming pot or Goldilocks sneakily tucking into a stolen bowl of oats or perhaps the infamous scene in Oliver Twist where the young orphan begs for one more bowl of the stuff with the unforgettable line ‘Please sir can I have some more?’
Well now it’s time to throw away all of your porridge based stereotypes as Porridge Cafe is here to prove just how limitless the options are.
Nik and Elly , the founders of this quirky cafe, already have a wealth of experience to draw on having set up their own catering company, Bow Kitchen, in 2013- a pop up company that has catered for many high profile events in and around London.
On a trip to Scandinavia they observed how much the people there loved their porridge and noted the high quality oats and creative recipes they used to keep the dish interesting. Noticing a porridge shaped void in the market over here they decided to set up their very own cafe in London’s trendy Shoreditch area.
Having researched the many different grains and methods used around the world they have decided on 11 grains that taste the best and also provide the best health benefits to come up with an inspired and diverse menu catering to both savory and sweet tastes.
Each day’s menu is different and has such exciting concoctions as Blueberry, Ginger and Cashew Butter or Passionfruit, Coconut and Agave Nectar for the sweeter options and Slow cooked Beef Ragu and Feta risotto or Salami, Pecorino and Porchini mushroom using spelt grain for a savoury main. Prices range from £2.35 for a basic bowl of porridge to £7 for a more substantial main with meat and veg.
This is a pop-up restaurant so if you like the sound of it go try it out and fingers crossed it will a become permanent. If healthy food tastes this good we are more than happy to break the fast! To find out more visit their website HERE
