Yodeling, acordian playing and the one and only Tivolian Cow Bell Show. It can only mean one thing, you’ve decided to pay a visit to one of London’s favourite Austrian themed restaurant ‘Tiroler Hut.’Established in 1967, this family run eatery has earned itself a loyal following ever since. Located between Paddington and Notting Hill you will find the inconspicuous entrance to one of the most fun and original restaurants you will visit in London.
As soon as you descend the stairs to the basement you are greeted by staff dressed in traditional Austrian outfits- girls in their dirndl dresses and men in lederhosen. From this moment on you will find yourself in an Austrian themed bubble of fun and frivolity! The decor also reflects the Austrian theme in a kitch but cheerful way- there are pretty red gingham tablecloths with matching curtains and scenes of idyllic Austrian countryside painted on the walls.
The food offers a great selection of traditional Austrian fayre such as Bratwurst, sauerkraut and shnitzel or you could try the cheese fondue if you’re in the mood for sharing. There is an excellent wine list or large steins of seemimgly bottomless beer to get you in the mood for merriment- for the more adventurous try a shot of Hungarian unicum, it’s one of the few places in the city to sell the herbal liquer.
Although the food is worth going for alone, the entertainment is what this place is really famous for. The atmosphere is relaxed and heady with music playing, guests singing along and impromptu performances from the owner during the night. Tiroler Hut is unashamedly cheesy so leave your inhibitions at the door and enjoy a fantastic night of food, fun and general sillyness that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!
